Animal Rights Activist Steals Fisherman’s Fish
St. Petersburg, FL – A dispute between a fisherman and an animal rights activist was captured on camera on Tuesday (video below.)
According to WTSP, Bob Hope was fishing with his family at Crescent Lake in St. Petersburg. While Hope was fishing with his family, minding his own business, he caught a 4 pound tilapia and was waiting for somebody to bring him a bucket to put it in.
A nearby family saw hope catch the fish, and send their young child over to confront him about it.
“Did you know that fish feel pain?” The child asked the fisherman. “When you hook them in their mouths, it really hurts them. So please stop fishing, it really hurts them.”
“Ok,” the fisherman responded, clearly not wanting to get involved in a conversation with a 9-year-old about the morality of fishing, but that’s not how the child’s mother, Kayla Leaming described it.
“These grown men were extremely hostile and laughed in his face,” Leaming told WTSP.
“I turned to him and said I respect your opinion but I don’t share your opinion so we’re going to continue fishing. That’s when six or seven people ambushed us that what we were doing is wrong and we’re hurting the fish,” Bob Hope said.
The confrontation escalated as the Leaming family flipped out over the incident. It concluded with the family stealing the fisherman’s fish and throwing it back into the lake while the fishermen called police.
By the time police arrived, everybody was already leaving. The police department released a statement about it which basically comes down to: the officer showed, saw that everybody was leaving and nobody was sticking around to make a report. Then he likely said to himself, “Thank goodness I don’t have to deal with this call.” He concluded by taking some notes, and cleared the call.
Because the fishermen didn’t stick around, there was no reasonable action the officer could have taken.
