Lieutenant Aaron Allan Murdered
Homecroft, IN – Southport Police Lieutenant Aaron Allan was murdered on Thursday, July 27, after responding to a traffic crash.
The incident occurred about 2:38 PM near Maynard Drive and Madison Avenue in Homecroft, a town located about eight miles south of Indianapolis, according to Fox59. Southport and Homecroft police officers responded to a report of a traffic crash involving property damage.
Lieutenant Allan responded to the traffic crash, got out of his vehicle and approached the two occupants of the vehicle, which had overturned in the yard of a residence. One of the occupants opened fire on Lieutenant Allan, and shot him multiple times. He was transported to Ezkenazi Hospital for treatment, where he later died.
An Homecroft Police Officer who was responding to the scene, and an off-duty Johnson County reserve deputy was driving by when the incident occurred, stopped, and returned fire at one of the suspects. They were able to take the shooter into custody.
One suspect was transported to Ezkenazi Hospital, where he remains hospitalized. A second suspect is also reported to be in custody. It is not clear if the suspects were shot during the incident, or received injuries from the traffic crash. The suspects’ names have not been released.
Witnesses reported hearing about “20 shots” after the vehicle overturned, and “…a lot of sirens”, according to WISHtv. Residents told News 8 WISH that they personally knew Lieutenant Allan from his frequent patrols of their neighborhood.
A veteran who was at the scene, David Andrzeejewski, told Fox59 that he was “disgusted.”
He said, “Being a vet, I was in the service, we’re kind of all in the brotherhood… he probably woke up in the morning told his kids goodbye gave them a kiss, pulls a car over. Next thing you know he’s in the hospital fighting for his life. It’s horrible. What’s it coming to? When’s it gonna end?”
“It is with a heavy heart that I say this afternoon we lost a brother, Lt. Aaron Allan,” Chief Vaughn said. “Lt. Allan was a six year veteran with the Southport Police Department and with nearly 20 years of experience in law enforcement. Lt. Allan was a hard worker and today was no different. He responded to a crash with urgency to preserve life. Tragically his was lost. We appreciate the community support as we continue to work through the loss of our brother.“
This hero leaves behind his wife Stacey and two young sons.
