Officer John Kamel Killed
Union City, NJ – Union City Police Officer John Kamel died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash on Thursday night He was off-duty at the time and on his way to work.
The incident occurred about 6:30 PM on the northbound side of John F. Kennedy Boulevard and 22nd Street. Union City and North Bergen police officers responded to a multi-vehicle crash, according to the Hudson County View. Officer Kamel, age 26, was riding his motorcycle on his way to work when he was involved in the traffic crash.
He was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center, but died from his injuries a short time later.
In a statement, Union City Mayor Brian Stack sai,d “I am in complete disbelief over the passing of PO John Kamel. I can still picture him speaking with business owners while walking patrol along Bergenline Avenue.”
Union City Police Chief Richard Molinari said, also in a statement, “The passing of PO John Kamel is tragic and heartbreaking. John’s love for the job was evident and and his loss will be felt by the entire community.”
He added, “The men and women of the Union City Police Department have suffered a great deal over the last seven months and John’s passing is another painful reminder for the city and the department.”
Officer Kamel was a life-long resident of Union City, and graduated from Emerson High School in 2009. He also graduated from New Jersey City University in 2013. He is a four-year veteran of the Union City Police Department.
This is the third death within the Union City Police Department within the past seven months. In December, 2016, Officer Ricardo Fernandez died unexpectedly, and Sergeant Mark Zeitounian died in a traffic crash in May.
