A massive manhunt for a suspected cop killer continued Tuesday morning around Clinton, Missouri.
Law enforcement officers have been looking for Ian McCarthy, 39, of Clinton, who is suspected of stepping out of his car during a traffic stop and opening fire on a police officer. Gary Michael, 37, was killed. He had been on the force less than a year.
As officers went door-to-door in Clinton, one woman remembered Officer Michael as a helpful man during a difficult time for her.
“I’ve had issues with people at my apartment and he was one of the ones on call,” the woman said.
The shooting happened before 11 p.m. Sunday.
“He didn’t have a chance,” said Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe. “It was a cowardly moment for that individual.”
According to 2001 court documents out of New Hampshire, McCarthy was convicted of first-degree assault. He was accused of stabbing a child several times, causing severe injuries to the victim’s neck, chest and abdomen.
The Associated Press reported McCarthy has been wanted since 2013 on an arrest warrant in New Hampshire.
Police believe McCarthy is likely still on foot somewhere in the Clinton area. He is considered armed and dangerous.
Officer Michael married his wife, Cresinda, in 2015. He leaves behind her and two stepsons.
