A male driver was shot and killed by Hollywood police officers Friday morning, after fleeing into Hallandale Beach and attempting to mow down officers with his car before speeding away, authorities said.
The police department did not disclose how many officers were involved in the shooting, but all were placed on administrative leave, per department policy.
Police were first called to North Federal Highway and Sheridan Street around 8:30 a.m., after a 911 call reported a man driving recklessly in the area, spokeswoman Miranda Grossman said. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, which fled south on Federal Highway into Hallandale Beach. After crossing the city limits, the driver attempted to hit officers with his car before continuing to drive away.
Officers confronted the driver around NE 6th Street and fired shots. The man, who was not identified, was struck and died at the scene, Grossman said.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, with the assistance of Broward Sheriff’s Office crime scene technicians, is conducting an investigation into the shooting.
Police said they are also searching for a witness who might have been in a 2008 or 2009 Dodge caravan with blue-tinted windows that was struck by the suspect’s vehicle.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
